ADVERTISEMEN T. HE Editor has great reason to hope that the lovers of Learn ing will think themselves obliged to him, for publishing a new Edition of Lord Bacon's Works, more methodical, more elegant, and every way more complete, than any preceding. T The ENGLISH Pieces are thrown into five principal divisions, and printed in the following order. 1. Philosophical . 2. Moral and Political. 3. Law. 4. Theology. 5. Letters. The Latin Pieces are separated from the rest, and ranged in the order pointed out by the Author himself, presenting, at one view, the several parts of his admirable plan for the great Instauration of the Sciences. But this just Disposition is not the only advantage, which the present edition claims over all the former : for to the English Tracts is now first added, Bacon's Apology for the earl of Essex, in the person of that Lord; and to the Latin, the several following Tra&ts: the Author's translation of his History of Henry the seventh; of his Esays civil and moral ; of his New Atlantis; and of his Advertisement touching an Holy War. To the third Volume is also prefixed the Life of Lord Bacon, written in Latin, by his chaplain Dr. Raleigh. The whole having been corrected with all possible care, is offered to the Publick much cheaper, though in a much more valuable form, than any preceding Edition. |
